Wade Boggs is a retired baseball player (based on and portrayed by the real Wade Boggs) who is brought in by the Santa Barbara Seabirds GM Neil Stillman to replace Shawn as the Seabirds hitting coach. Later on Neil is about to kill Shawn, Gus and Cal Eason but abandons the plan when Wade shows up, as he doesn't want to kill a famous person.
Despite the man who hired him being arrested, Wade stays on as the Seabirds hitting coach under head coach Mel Hornsby. He argues with Henry over Shawn's hitting stance, with Shawn taking Wade's side as he is a former MLB player. Wade watches as Shawn makes a bet with Mel that he can start at second base if he hits a homerun, but it goes foul and Mel walks off laughing together with Wade.
