Scene-by-scene synopsis[]

The press is out in full force as Buzz arrives at the station to book a murderer. However, Lassiter unexpectedly appears on the front steps and declares to Buzz and the crowd that the wrong man was arrested. He tells them that the detainee was in fact framed by his lawyer, but when he suddenly starts talking gibberish we learn that he is being fed his lines through an earpiece by Shawn, who's hiding behind the shrubbery and distracted by an unrelated argument with Gus. Embarrassed and left helpless without Shawn's information, Lassiter just tells Buzz to book the lawyer before walking off.

Shawn, Gus and Lassiter are about to get into The Dualberry when Lassiter tells the duo how humiliated he felt as a result of their antics. Shawn assures him that he looked great up there and that they still gave the reporters more than enough information to reassess the case.

Because of the Dualberry's dual controls, Lassiter occupies the driver's seat while Shawn nominally drives him home, giving Lassiter the sensation of driving for the first time in a while, Shawn and Gus tell him that they can't keep coming to Santa Barbara to secretly help him out on his cases, and that he has now recovered enough to make do without their help. However, Lassiter replies they need to keep helping him because the SBPD want him out.

The duo visit Henry, where Shawn talks to his father about the Lassiter situation. Henry promises to give Lassiter some help on the case, but also tells Shawn that he should stop giving Lassiter false hope as it's starting to look like he might never make a full recovery. Given that Gus is outside making a phone call, Shawn feels free to share his concerns over another issue: he and Gus are drifting apart. Henry assures him that this is only natural now that Gus is going to be a father and that they'll figure it out as long as he's always there for him.

Shawn and Gus go on a few errands for Gus's wedding: they pick up a gender-reveal box, try a few desserts, buy some flowers and get fitted for suits. Meanwhile, they express their love for each other and Gus mentions that he's already asked Father Westley to do the ceremony. However, Selene still hasn't divorced her current husband even though the wedding is just around the corner. What's more, she's being secretive and doesn't even want Gus's help.

Shawn surprises Juliet at the station. He wants her to use police resources in order to find out who Selene's husband is, but Juliet refuses because she wants Gus and Selene to choose her as the baby's godmother over their own sisters, especially now that she and Shawn have decided not to have children of their own.

Shawn visits Karen in her office. She's packing in preparation for a well-deserved vacation and turns down Shawn's request of running a background check on Selene's husband even before he can ask. However, upon further prodding she admits she's also suspicious and allows Shawn to use her computer while she hurries to a court case. Shawn expectantly enters Selene's name into the system, but to his concern she just doesn't appear to exist.

Karen is supposed to meet up with Woody and serve as a character witness in his trial for impersonating Dr. Amerigo Catalon, but to her frustration he's running late and instead calls her. Karen becomes even more frustrated when he tells her that he will be representing himself in court, and she can only advise him to hurry up and stick to the story that he was an undercover officer sent to the Herschel House to protect Lassiter. Karen hangs up on Woody when she sees a call from Richard coming in, and she has to disappoint him with the news that she won't be able to make it home in time for their planned departure. They agree that he and Iris should go on ahead to their camping spot and she will join them there later.

Shawn, Gus, Juliet and Selene are eating out when Shawn rather bluntly asks Selene for her social security number. Juliet whispers to Shawn to stop what he's doing, but Shawn whispers back that Karen is on his side now. He excuses himself to go to the bathroom and snatches Selene's purse off the back of her chair as he moves past her.

In the bathroom, Shawn discovers from an imprint in Selene's wallet that she used to reside in Santa Monica. He starts copying the information when Gus comes in and, shocked at the scene, angrily tells Shawn to stop suspecting the women he dates of being criminals. They start fighting for the purse, and when they've exhausted themselves and made up again Gus reassures Shawn that he won't have to worry about losing him. Shawn informs Gus that Selene doesn't appear in the police database, but Gus is having none of it and refuses to bother Selene with questions about her past. Shawn then remembers Juliet's comment about Selene having a sister, and Gus agrees to go visit her to find out more.

On the way to Selene's sister, Whitney, Gus calls Curt Smith and manages to book him for his wedding.

When they arrive at Whitney's, she pretends not to know Gus and, aided by her boyfriend Glen, escapes by car.

Totally confused, Shawn and Gus pursue Whitney in The Dualberry and witness her crashing through a barrier and landing downhill. The duo go to check on her, and she admits that Selene hired her to play her sister to validate her fake identity as Selene Gilmore to Gus. When Shawn asks about Santa Monica, Whitney says that that's where she met Selene and gives them the exact address.

Selene has noticed from the state of her purse that Shawn and Gus are trying to find out more about her past, so she visits Juliet in her office and tells her that they could be in grave danger.

Shawn and Gus go to Santa Monica to visit the apartment complex where Selene used to reside, but the rental manager has had some bad experiences with her and her husband and sends our inquisitive duo away.

Juliet and Selene are walking through the woods trying to find Karen to ask her where Shawn might have gone. Selene is just letting Juliet know how much she appreciates their friendship when they are startled by a sound, which turns out to be Karen finding them.

Shawn and Gus go back to the apartment in disguises. The manager instantly realizes it would be less of a headache to just let them in and asks her assistant Bryn to show them around. Shawn immediately notices a discoloration on the ceiling, punches a hole through the plaster and takes out a lockbox. As they are trying to figure out how to open it, Bryn tells them that Selene's husband would often disappear for days at a time and that one night they just bolted. When Gus eventually manages to jimmy the lock, they find a gun with scraped-off serial numbers and several fake IDs.

Shawn and Gus take their loot to Henry, who discovers that one of the IDs is not a fake. Shawn tells his father to help out Lassiter, and when he finds a half-finished crib (as Henry still thought Juliet was pregnant) he has to disappoint him with the news that he and Juliet aren't planning on having kids.

Karen takes Juliet and Selene to her campsite, where they apologize for barging in on a family vacation. However, Karen tearfully explains that Richard and Iris left because they were disappointed she once again chose work over them and didn't want to spend another vacation without her. The trio share an emotional moment, and when Karen says she just needs something to solve to take her mind off the situation she points out to Selene that Shawn had expressed his doubts about her. Selene agrees to tell them everything.

Shawn and Gus arrive at the Cayucos address on the real ID and decide to break in. They find a big board full of photos and newspaper clippings before they are confronted by Alan Decker, Selene's husband. He tells them the story of Ronald "The Bull" Cole, a brewery CEO who is secretly a drug-smuggling arms dealer, and meanwhile Selene tells Juliet and Karen the same story from her perspective. Alan and Selene met when they were both sent to Cole's brewery works, he as a private investigator while she had to take photos of a comp claim. They decided to work together, and soon sparks started to fly. When they tailed a delivery van to a drop-off, they witnessed an altercation between Cole's bodyguard and a thug. A gun was left behind, but the police turned a deaf ear when presented with this evidence as they didn't believe Cole could possibly be a criminal. Intoxicated by the prospect of fighting crime alone, Alan and Selene got married by Alan's cousin on a whim. However, they soon realized Cole's goons would find them wherever they went and split up to stay alive. Alan figured he had nothing else to lose and kept investigating, whereas Selene moved on and found Gus. As she does not want to lose him, the trio decide to save him and Shawn before they can get into even more trouble.

Henry visits Lassiter with the gun Shawn and Gus found in hopes of recovering the serial number. Lassiter tells him that his suspect got released as a result of his humiliating display, but Henry assures him that they'll build up the rest of the case together.

Alan tells Shawn and Gus that if they help him bring Cole to justice, he'll divorce Selene and disappear from her life forever. Unsurprisingly, they eagerly take him up on his offer.

When Lily shows her father a text from Marlowe, he is reminded of her love for him and gets emotional. He calls himself a fool for wallowing in self-pity instead of showing his family how much he appreciates them. Henry tells him that he'll have to let go of what happened, as it's no use living in the past despite how unfair his hardships might be. Lassiter agrees, and he and Lily help Henry find an acid compound to recover the gun's serial number.

Alan shares his plan with Shawn and Gus: they will get into the brewery by posing as keg deliverymen, and once they disable the alarm system Alan will sneak into the safe room and steal Cole's ledger.

Juliet and Karen are in Alan and Selene's old apartment, where Bryn tells them about her brief run-in with Shawn and Gus. Juliet then gets a call from Henry, who informs her of the gun and the Cayucos ID. Selene enters just as Juliet wonders aloud where Cayucos is, and she immediately understands Alan must have continued their investigation alone and has now taken our duo to the brewery.

Shawn and Gus arrive at the brewery with Alan in the back, but unfortunately security guard J. Ramsay does not believe Shawn's silly explanation as to why he's suddenly dealing with two unfamiliar faces. He's about to call this irregularity in to his boss when Gus performs some ventriloquism in a last-ditch attempt to be let through. Against all odds the trick doesn't make things worse and actually delights Ramsay, as he happens to be a huge Jeff Dunham fan. The ice officially broken, Ramsay happily opens the gate.

Shawn and Gus part ways with Alan and make their way over to the electrical room, where they again express their love for each other. When Gus cuts the wrong power cable and the alarms go off anyway, a befuddled Ramsay leaves his post to investigate. This tips off Karen, Juliet and Selene, who had been parked outside the brewery ready to swoop in, that their time has come.

As Shawn and Gus are trying to get as far away from the electrical room as possible, a gunshot rings out. When they arrive at a potential hiding spot, they find the deceased recipient of a headshot. Shawn recognizes the man from a photo on Alan's board and realizes they're looking at Ronald Cole. As our unsettled duo try to figure out their next move, Alan enters the room. He tells them he managed to obtain the ledger, but then threatens them with a gun. He says that now they're in the same room as Cole anyway, he might as well pin the murder on them and pretend all three died in a shoot-out. He also reveals that he and Selene were never legally married since his cousin is not ordained. As Gus makes it clear he won't get rid of them that easily, Selene enters and seems successful in her attempt to dissuade Alan from any more killing. However, Alan suddenly turns around again and Gus reflexively responds by throwing his gender-reveal box at him. The hit doesn't hurt Alan, but soon after the box lands it launches a cloud of blue powder into his eyes. Now that Alan's temporarily incapacitated, Gus rushes him and knocks him unconscious with his ventriloquist doll. Shawn disarms Alan and our three heroes celebrate the impending birth of a baby boy, and as if on cue Selene's contractions start. In a panic, they roll her out of the room on a keg dolly.

Meanwhile, Karen and Juliet have just done a sweep of the building and decide to do one more. Back-up has also arrived.

Shawn, Gus and Selene can't find their way out of the building, but they spot a sofa in the safe room where Selene can take a breather. Selene confesses that there's really no way they can wait any longer, so the baby will have to be delivered in the safe room. As Gus and Selene don't want their child to be born out of wedlock, Gus hurries out of the room and comes back with two laptops that are connected to Father Westley and Curt Smith via Zoom. After a messy wedding ceremony that is fortunately largely unaffected by the chaos outside, the two are finally married and Selene can start pushing. Shawn delivers the baby right as the emergeny responders break open the time-locked door and Juliet and Karen can join the group. As they celebrate, Juliet is delighted to hear Selene did indeed end up choosing her and Shawn as the baby's godparents. Unfortunately, however, Alan is still at large as Karen did not find him where he should have been.

The film ends with a music video for Curt Smith's new project that features the whole gang playing '80s characters at a snowy cabin.

Trivia[]

  • This film is dedicated to Alan Decker, an Emmy Award-winning re-recording mixer who died on December 23, 2020. He worked on 61 episodes of Psych as well as the previous two films. Allen Maldonado's character is also named Alan Decker as another homage.
  • Curt Smith's song Previous Holiday and the accompanying music video are a parody of Christmas songs/music videos, especially Wham!'s Last Christmas (as evident by the name) and the love triangle depicted in the video (George Michael plays a character who lost his girlfriend (played by Kathy Hill) to Andrew Ridgeley's character). Gus plays Michael's part, Shawn plays Ridgeley's, and Selene plays Hill's.
  • There is a pineapple decoration visible in the christmas tree during the music video.
  • Shawn, Gus, Juliet and Selene dine at a restaurant called Berman's. This is a reference to Andy Berman, who has written and produced multiple Psych episodes and occasionally appeared as an extra.
  • The opening sequence mimics those of Marvel movies with multiple scenes displayed within the letters of "Psych".
  • The subtitle "This Is Gus" is not only appropriate to the film's subject matter but is also a reference to This Is Us, a show on USA Network's sister channel NBC which featured Timothy Omundson (7 episodes), Kirsten Nelson (2 episodes) and Dulé Hill (1 episode).
  • At one point Shawn introduces Gus as "Black Jack Arnold". Jack Arnold is the name of the father from The Wonder Years, which was remade in 2021 with Dulé Hill playing the part of the father. What's more, Allen Maldonado has a recurring role on the show as Coach Long.
  • When Shawn introduces Gus as "Burton Guster-Rodriguez" and says "It's always been there," this is a reference to James Roday Rodriguez's decision to change his screen name in July 2020 to include his own last name.
  • Ray Wise reprises his role as Peter Westley from S4E4 "The Devil Is in the Details... and the Upstairs Bedroom" and S5E12 "Dual Spires", and Curt Smith reprises his role as himself after previously appearing in S5E8 "Shawn 2.0", S7E5 "100 Clues" and S8E9 "A Nightmare on State Street".
  • Katie Findlay, who plays Bryn, previously appeared in the Psychverse as Minka in S5E8 "Shawn 2.0".
  • This movie was released on Peacock, which Shawn and Gus claim never to have heard of when Whitney mentions she's an actress. Shawn also says that he stopped watching USA Network in 2014, which is the year Psych ended.
  • In Santa Monica, Shawn asks Gus whether he thinks Meghan Markle invited all of her Suits co-stars to the royal wedding, and Gus says that she didn't. Dulé Hill had a recurring role on Suits and was therefore one of Markle's co-stars. This is also why he told Whitney he only stopped watching USA Network after the last few seasons of Suits.
  • When donning disguises, Shawn dresses up as Rob Zombie. This is a reference to a real world event where a casting director friend sent him side-by-side photos asking if he realized he looked just like Zombie. "I'm a grown-ass man in middle age and I've been minding my own business," said James, "and doing my own thing and, to find out like that after all this time that I'm the spitting image of Rob Zombie..." Others have noticed as well.
  • Bryn confuses Gus' puppet for Urkel, resulting in an argument over Urkel's appearance and the integrity of the character. Jaleel White, who played Urkel, appeared in the Psychverse as Gus' friend Tony Clemon in "High Top Fade-Out" and "Let's Doo-Wop It Again".
  • When Shawn and Gus fear detection at the brew works, Gus says "Winter Soldier" and the duo assume heroic poses identical to those taken on by Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson on the poster of the 2021 Marvel miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This reference was made because when the miniseries first aired, many fans felt the dynamic between the superhero duo was very similar to that between Shawn and Gus. This is also why the two are wearing uniforms that are name-tagged "Buck" and "Wilson".
  • Gus references Val Kilmer in the 1999 film At First Sight during the delivery of the baby. Val Kilmer appeared as Dobson on Psych, and Kilmer's co-star in that film, Mira Sorvino, appeared as Betsy Brannigan.
  • When Selene asks Juliet for help because she cannot get ahold of Gus, Juliet says she's "having a serious déjà vu right now". This is a reference to Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, where Selene faces the same problem and also asks Juliet for help.
  • Henry mentions adjoining water slides as Shawn discusses his friendship with Gus with him. This is a reference to the connected swimming pool Shawn and Gus want across their backyards, which is also mentioned in S4E11 "Thrill Seekers and Hell Raisers", S8E10 "The Break-Up" and Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
  • Shawn's suggestion that Karen change her name is a reference to the negative connotations the name carries after it became a meme to denote obnoxious and entitled customers.

Quotes[]

Henry: All male friendships die at fatherhood, Shawn. I tried to prepare you for this when you were younger.
Shawn: I don't remember that.
Henry: That's because you have a very selective memory.
Shawn: Well, sure, what's the point of having a memory if you can't choose what to remember? It's called America.

Shawn: I'll be honest, I didn't think we'd have to take our pants off for this.
Phil: I didn't ask you to. You are like toddlers.
Shawn: Well observed. Here's a question: can mine be parachute pants?
Phil: You must leave.

Karen: [takes Woody's phone call] Woody, you should be here by now.
Woody: Oh, don't be a Karen, Karen. Have you ever heard the term "fashionably late"?
Karen: You're the defendant.
Woody: Class is class. Even when the state is trying to prosecute you wrongfully.
Karen: Okay, get here now. You have a little reprieve because your public defender still hasn't arrived yet.
Woody: Well, of course they aren't there, because they are me. Ta-da! I have decided to represent myself.
Karen: [indignantly] Wait. Wait, what? Noooooooo.
Woody: Hear me out. This way, I can pocket the money they had earmarked for the public defender. I figure I can drag out the trial for six months, build up a nice little nest egg for myself, and then plead out insanity!
Karen: Woody, I carved out 90 minutes for this hearing. And you can't just decide that you're an attorney.
Woody: Chief, I wasn't born yesterday. I passed the bar. Is the judge going to be wearing this? [shows marching band jacket] I don't want to step on his toes. I sent all the pertinent information to your assistant. [lies down on bed] I think you'll find it all checks out.
Chipera: [to Karen] They're ready for us.
Karen: [angrily] Woody, leave your house now. I will stall, okay? And on the way, go over your statement. Stick only to the facts. You were not impersonating a doctor for fun. You were working undercover, for Chief Carlton Lassiter, who was in imminent danger from the people who were working at the rehab facility. And don't mention the surgery that you tried to perform.
Woody: Oh, please, it was a small outpatient surgery, and I underbilled the insurance company.
Karen: Okay, Woody, I have another call. Be here in ten minutes, or you don't have a character witness.
Woody: Oh, I need an hour. I just shaved my armpits. I need to bronze...
[Karen hangs up]

Henry: This crib was for you, Shawn.
Shawn: Oh, Dad, that's very sweet, but I sleep in a big-boy bed now.

Alan: All right! I got the plan.
Gus: We already figured it out.
Alan: Guys, I've literally been studying the ins and outs of this place for months.
Shawn: We know, and it's very impressive. But before you launch into hieroglyphics and string theory and whatever else you have on that corkboard, just... you're gonna want to hear our plan.
Alan: Make it quick.
[Shawn gestures wildly all throughout his explanation while Gus holds up the accompanying drawings and Alan slowly loses his patience]
Shawn: We dig a trench and tunnel under the brewery, resurfacing on the inside. You, Alan, free-climb the barley vats and wait up top, next to the thermal exhaust port.
Alan: There is no thermal exhaust port.
Shawn: Gus reaches out his hand and pulls you through. Where am I? I'm on the flank, serving up "look, it's me, not a stuntman" realness. There's a confrontation with a man holding a wrench, and we're all chased by motorcycles. You grab the evidence. We escape through a hole in the wall. Then, I find a house of windows.
Gus: What?
Shawn: A house of windows.
Gus: What?
Shawn: A house...
Gus: Of windows.
Shawn: You realize I'm not who I appear to be, yet my hair remains unchanged. We end up right back here, in this cottage, where I start to throw myself against the walls. [throws himself across the room and back] Then I stop for reasons unknown. And Gus weeps.
Gus: [indignantly] You weep.
Alan: What you just pitched was essentially the plot from the "Take on Me" video.
Gus: Wow. He really knows his stuff.
Shawn: That's not possible. Would you have gotten it without the illustrations?
Alan: Never looked.
