Mortimer Tilden is the second murder victim of Wes Hiltonbock, who forced him to swallow pills to make the death look like a suicide. Hiltonbock was extremely upset when his brother Bill took his own life and vowed to take revenge by killing other 'weak' people like him. He knew where to find Tilden because he had secretly been listening in to the calls he had made to an 1800 stress line.
The four clues that Hiltonbock didn't account for and which tell Shawn that something is off about this suicide are that:
- there was a steak marinating in the refrigerator, which indicates the kind of future planning someone on the verge of suicide wouldn't do;
- the door latch was unlocked, although there is no way a person committing suicide would have risked anyone barging in on the act;
- there was an odd streak of grease on the floor in an otherwise immaculate household;
- there was loud metal music playing at the crime scene, which seems a strange choice of music for a 45-year-old upper-class man.
Mortimer Tilden was also the owner of Little Boy Cat, which Shawn claimed to communicate with throughout the episode and then gave to Buzz McNab as a wedding gift after Hiltonbock's arrest.
