Mitch Murray is Senior Vice President of the Central Coast Pharmaceuticals branch in Santa Barbara and therefore one of Gus's and his colleagues' superiors. He is based out of the Sacramento headquarters and likes rewarding his underlings with scratch-and-sniff stickers.
When Vice President of the branch Dorian Creech is murdered, Murray organizes an in-office memorial service where he claims to admire Creech for his sales record. He delivers a rousing speech and later appoints Gus as the new VP, supposedly for his fearlessness in confronting authority figure Creech the previous day.
Head of Security Leslie Sally's investigation of the murder reveals the horrid truth about Murray, however. Murray had been padding the numbers of the Santa Barbara branch to make it appear more successful than it was in reality, and when Creech found out about this he used this knowledge as an opportunity to blackmail Murray into giving him his position. When Murray's attempt to placate Creech by offering him a job in San Antonio didn't work, he killed him with a letter opener. He later committed a second murder by poisoning Sally's thermos flask to keep him from outing him, but that was too late a move. It also turns out that Murray only appointed Gus as VP because he considered him too dumb to be able to blackmail him like Creech did.
Trivia[]
- The episode Office Space makes quite a few references to the 1992 film Glengarry Glen Ross. Mitch closely resembles that film's Blake character, and the owners who send Blake to the office are called Mitch and Murray.
