Devon Tileback is the CEO of a growing technology company whose hand is found by Morrissey in the woods near the Herschel House recovery home. Since Lassiter had been telling Shawn and Gus about the mysterious goings-on at the home right before Morrissey brought in the hand, our duo have ample reason to investigate. They ship the hand over to Woody, who (after the duo's failed attempt to have Morrissey track down the rest of the body) finds a fingerprint and informs Shawn and Gus that the hand belongs to Devon. He says that there is no murder involved, as the Santa Barbara Mirror had a week earlier reported Devon's suicide off a bridge into the Santa Ynez river.
As Shawn and Gus visit Lassiter to tell him the news, he asks them to look around the home's equine therapy stables to find an injured figure he saw sneak in there the previous night. The duo reluctantly agree and do not find the figure, but they do consider head doctor Emile Herschel's dismissive attitude suspicious when he discovers them trespassing. They decide to look into the case further, and thanks to Shawn's hyperobservancy skills they find out that Devon frequented the Viking's Den Ice Bar, which is strange because it is quite far away and as CEO of his company he could not have had much spare time.
Shawn and Gus go to the bar and ask bartender Alina about Devon, who warns them not to mention his name in the bar because he owed a lot of money, which strikes Shawn as odd because Devon was actually quite wealthy. Alina always thought of Devon as a good guy, but she is afraid he was starting to lose it when he kept going on about all his dark secrets being exposed. Before she can elaborate, bar owner Ova Asblorn comes in and interrupts the conversation.
When Shawn and Gus have to flee the bar because Gus accidentally invoked the wrath of the owner's son, Per, they suddenly encounter Devon (minus his left hand) nearby, who threatens them with a gun to stop investigating his alleged death. Before Shawn and Gus can even process what just happened, Devon is killed from a distance by a hidden shooter. When Buzz arrives to lead the case, the duo tell him their theory that Devon faked his death because he owed a lot of money to the wrong people.
Shawn and Gus manage to break the case on their next visit to the Herschel House, where they spot Wilkerson, a patient said to be in a catatonic coma, sneak down the hallway. Alarmed, the duo chase him down and confront him about his fake coma. Over the course of the conversation, it is revealed Wilkerson is a silent partner in Devon's company. Wilkerson says that he and Devon had an IPO coming up and had to cover up their cooking of the books. After suffering a stroke from the stress of hiding this crime, Wilkerson was brought to the Herschel House, where he admitted their wrong-doing to Dr. Herschel under the influence of psychotropes. Some days later, the silhouetted man that would go on to shoot Lassiter went to Devon's office and blackmailed him. This worked until Devon wanted to meet up with Lassiter. Devon fled when Lassiter was shot, but he was found shortly after and had his hand cut off as a warning, after which he faked his death. When he was found again, he was killed. Although the identity of the hidden shooter isn't entirely certain, Shawn and Gus later find out that it is the head nurse of the Herschel House, Dolores O'Riordan, who is running the blackmailing scheme and that she had enlisted the help of Per as the outside man, who threatened Devon at his office and also shot Lassiter.
