Carl Kozlowski is a security tech at Startek Security Company. Lassiter and Juliet interview him at his place of work after realizing that all of the houses part of a recent string of burglaries have a Startek system installed that did not do its job. Carl says that "people get overconfident with a security system and neglect taking even the most basic precautions," and that this includes never even turning the system on in the first place. Lassiter and Juliet consider the likelihood rather low that all of the affected homeowners just forgot to turn on their system, so they confront Carl with their theory that a Startek employee simply obtained the access codes to the systems in the robbed houses before breaking in. Carl thinks this is silly and condescendingly tells Lassiter that Startek employees would choose better houses to rob, even going as far as showing Lassiter a picture of a mansion while commenting "I would rob this bad boy so fast your head would spin." Unsurprisingly, Lassiter thinks this is rather interesting.
When Lassiter finds some of the robbed items at an exotic reptile shop, he interviews owner Anthony Ogletree and describes Carl to him as he inquires who sold him the items ("Pasty white guy? Beatnik haircut? Stupid grin?"). However, since Carl isn't actually the culprit Anthony cannot confirm this description.
