Brian Sampson is a man who becomes of interest to the SBPD after Stuart Crawford disappears and they discover that the two used to be business partners. As they consider Stu's escape so complex that he can't have planned it on his own, they want to bring him in for questioning. However, they soon find his body in the woods. It looks like a hunting accident, but Lassiter and Juliet also found out that Stu and Brian had both taken out life insurance policies worth one million dollars, naming the other as beneficiary. They now have reason to believe Stu killed Brian to collect the insurance, and that suspicion only grows when Ruby tells Shawn and Gus that it was Brian who caused the company to go bankrupt in the first place by living beyond his means. When they finally find Stu in Lone Pine, CA, it turns out he killed himself, seemingly because he was not able to bear the guilt of killing Brian.
Not buying it, Shawn visits Woody and discovers that Brian was shot in the chest with a Winchester 70. Lassiter and Juliet already know that Stu's friend Jessica Martino has a Winchester 70 in her house and a history of stalking Brian, and as their new prime suspect she is swiftly arrested. However, it later turns out that it was in fact Derek Walker who killed Brian out of loyalty to Stu, using his key to Jessica's apartment to retrieve the Winchester he had given her.

- Shawn thinks 'Sampson' is an interesting name, and conjures up a different image every time Juliet says it:
- Sampson, that's just a great name. Straight out of film noir. An old detective who drinks hard but loves even harder. Or go with me here. [in a squeaky British voice] Sampson, a tiny little orphan mouse who must find his way home to Wolverhampton.
- Great name. Sounds like one of the dwarf warriors from Willow.
- Sampson? The lovable St. Bernard who lives next door but doesn't realize how big he is.
