Alan Decker is Selene's apparent husband whom Shawn and Gus need to track down so that Selene can divorce him and marry Gus. Since Selene refuses to accept the duo's help, Shawn goes through her purse for clues and finds out she and Alan used to live together in Santa Monica. Whitney gives our duo the exact address.
At Alan and Selene's old apartment (#336), their former landlord says she wants nothing more to do with them after they suddenly disappeared in the middle of the night two years ago, leaving her to move out their belongings. To Gus's frustration, her assistant Bryn describes Alan as "beautiful, inside and out" and claims he and Selene were "really cute together". However, she also felt that Alan didn't really live at the apartment as he would sometimes be gone for days at a time. Meanwhile, Shawn has found a lockbox in the ceiling that contains several fake IDs and one real one. This real ID sends them to the small coastal town of Cayucos, where they find a sad-looking house in the middle of nowhere.
Shawn and Gus believe the home to be abandoned and decide to break in, but Alan still lives there and leaves his hiding spot to threaten them with fake guns. However, he calms down when he takes Gus's phone and sees Selene on the lockscreen. When our duo inquire about the big board full of clippings behind them, Alan tells them the story of Ronald "The Bull" Cole, a brewery CEO who is secretly a drug-smuggling arms dealer. Alan and Selene met when they were both sent to Cole's brewery works, he as a private investigator while she had to take photos of a comp claim. They decided to work together, and soon sparks started to fly. When they tailed a delivery van to a drop-off, they witnessed an altercation between Cole's bodyguard and a thug. A gun was left behind, but the police turned a deaf ear when presented with this evidence as they didn't believe Cole could possibly be a criminal. Intoxicated by the prospect of fighting crime alone, Alan and Selene got married by Alan's cousin Nipsey on a whim. However, Alan soon realized Cole's goons would find them wherever they went and broke up with Selene on a Post-it Note in order to protect her. Alan figured he had nothing else to lose and kept investigating, and now he offers Shawn and Gus a deal: if they help him bring Cole to justice, he'll divorce Selene and disappear from her life forever. Unsurprisingly, they eagerly accept these terms.
Before he can tell them his plan, however, he first has to hear out their "plan", which is really just a summary of A-ha's "Take on Me" music video. When they're finally done, he lays out what's actually going to happen: Shawn and Gus will get into the brewery by posing as keg deliverymen while Alan is hiding in the back of the van, and once inside they will turn off the alarm to allow Alan to sneak into the safe room and steal Cole's ledger.
Unfortunately the plan goes awry when Gus cuts the wrong cable and the alarm goes off anyway. When our duo arrive at the tasting room and decide to lie low there, they find a dead Cole. Shortly after Alan also enters the room and tells them he managed to obtain the ledger, but once he threatens them with a gun it's clear his plan also included killing Cole. He says that now they're in the same room as Cole anyway, he might as well pin the murder on them and pretend all three died in a shoot-out. He also reveals that he and Selene were never legally married since Nipsey is not ordained. As Gus makes it clear he won't get rid of them that easily, Selene enters and seems successful in her attempt to dissuade Alan from any more killing. However, Alan suddenly turns around again and Gus reflexively responds by throwing his gender-reveal box at him. The hit doesn't hurt Alan, but soon after the box lands it launches a cloud of blue powder into his eyes. Now that Alan's temporarily incapacitated, Gus rushes him and knocks him unconscious with his ventriloquist doll. Shawn disarms him before he, Gus and Selene have to rush out of the room because Selene's contractions have started.
After Gus and Selene have been married and the baby has been delivered, Shawn fully expects Karen to inform him of Alan's arrest. However, when she says she never saw anyone in the tasting room it's clear Alan is still at large.
